Around June 2015 we started making the freshwater mussel survey app for Toronto Zoo. Currently we are working the second revision of the android prototype.
The app replaces paper survey form with digital questionnaires. The results are cached and stored on the phone. They are sent to the desired recipient when internet connection is available.
The app is originally intended children. It features a lot of large pictures and simplified wording. As the project grows, we add more scientific information about the mussels due to requests from DFO.
The fine balance between “easy to understand” and “scientifically accurate” is one of the many challenges of this app (and scientific illustrations in general).
